How to make date paste

What you need to make date paste

Instructions to make date paste

  1.  Remove pits from dates
  2. Let dates sit in hot water for 10 + minutes
  3. In a food processor blend dates until smooth (leaving excess water behind)
  4. Store date paste in refrigerator

Tips for making date paste

  • Use medjool dates as they are a softer variety
  • Always blend with less liquid as you can add more as you go
  • Soaking dates first will help get a creamier consistency

How long does date paste last

Date paste can be stored in an airtight container like a jar for 3 to 4 weeks in the refrigerator.

Freezing date paste

Date paste can also be frozen. Freeze your date paste for up to 6 months and thaw in fridge before use. Try freezing in an ice cube tray and storing in a ziploc bag for single use portions.

Where to buy dates

Dates can be found at your local grocery store usually near the produce, bulk items or nuts. I have even found dates at my local Aldi store for under $5. Dates are also available to purchase online like these

Date paste vs date syrup

The difference between date paste and date syrup is how it is made and the consistency. Date syrup is made by a process of boiling and blending the dates then straining them leaving a sweet syrup. Date paste on the other hand is thicker and is made by blending up dates and water.

Where to buy date paste

If you are not ready to make your own date paste buying some may be a good option.  Your local natural food market or Whole Foods would be the best option. You can also buy date paste online from brands like Wanna Date? or Honeyland

Where to buy date syrup

You should be able to find date syrup at Whole Foods or your local natural market however it is not available at most grocery stores. You can find many options for sale online. Some brands include The Date Lady and Just Date Syrup

How to sub date paste for sugar in baking

To substitute date paste for sugar in baking use a 1:1 ratio. If a recipe calls for a liquid sweetener like honey or maple syrup I would add an extra 1-2 tbsp of date paste for every 1/2 cup of liquid sweetener called for.

Dates are good for you

Date paste may be a healthier option than sugar as it includes many health benefits. Dates are high in fiber and antioxidants. Dates also contain many vitamins and minerals. Check out this article for more on the health benefist of dates https://www.healthline.com/nutrition/benefits-of-dates
