Vegan Dinner Rolls Recipe (Oil Free)

This healthy vegan dinner roll recipe is simple and easy to make with minimal ingredients; perfect for a nice dinner or holiday gathering.

Whole Wheat Flour
Fast Rise Instant Yeast
Sugar
Salt
Almond Butter

If you are not familiar with the types of yeast it can be confusing on what to buy. Look for instant yeast that is fast rise, rapid rise or quick rise. This type of yeast will save you time as it does not need to be dissolved before using. 

You will spend  about 15 minutes of prep time for these fluffy rolls. The remaining time is spent letting the rolls rise and bake which means you have time to focus on cooking the rest of the meal. Plan to start making your dinner rolls at least 1 hour and 20 minutes before you want them out of the oven.

How to Make Vegan Dinner Rolls

  1. Warm water to 120º-130ºF
  2. Add ingredients to a bowl
  3. Mix
  4. Knead your dough
  5. Split into 8 balls
  6. Let rise for 45 minutes
  7. Bake 18-20 minutes

Traditionally rolls may be brushed with an egg wash or butter. A vegan substitute to brush on would be coconut oil. If you are avoiding oil you can brush the rolls with aquafaba or plant based milk. Aquafaba is the liquid in a can of chickpeas.

This dinner roll recipe has no milk, no eggs, no butter and no oil. Perfect for anyone eating a vegan diet or looking for a healthier recipe. This recipe is not completely whole food plant based as we still use a little sugar but we skip the oil and use almond butter instead. If you are looking for a deeper flavor try using brown coconut sugar!

Vegan Dinner Rolls

Easy to make fluffy dinner rolls with a few minimal ingredients. Vegan friendly and free from oil, butter, eggs & milk.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tbsp almond butter
  • 2 ¼ tsp fast rise instant yeast
  • ¾ cup warm water
  • 2 tbsp aquafaba liquid from canned chickpeas

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl add 1 cup flour, salt, sugar, almond butter and yeast.

  2. Warm water to between 120° – 130° F and add to bowl.

  3. With an electric mixer start mixing on low, then mix on medium for 2-3 minutes.

  4. Add in ¼ -½ c of flour until you have a soft dough.

  5. Flour a clean surface & flour your hands and knead the dough for about 5 minutes.

  6. Split dough into 8 equal balls.

  7. Line and 8 inch pan with parchment paper and evenly space your dough balls.

  8. Cover with a towel and leet rest in a warm place for 35-45 minutes.

  9. Optional: Brush rolls with aquafaba before baking

  10. Bake at 375° F for 18-20 minutes.

Recipe Notes

  • Rolls are best enjoyed the same day as baked
  • You could optionally also brush rolls with a little coconut oil
  • Use brown sugar for a deeper, caramel flavor
