Vegan Ice Cream in Chicago
Jeni’s Ice Cream
Jeni’s Ice Cream offers pints of ice cream and has scoop shops in Old Town on North Wells, in Lincoln Park on Armitage, Wicker Park on Milwaukee, Lakeview on Southport and in Wrigleyville on Clark. They offer multiple dairy free flavors: Dark Chocolate Truffle, Cold Brew with Coconut Cream, Roasted Peanut Butter and Strawberry Jam, and Texas Sheet Cake. Sorbet flavors include Frosé. Ice cream and sorbets are made with bone char-free sugar.
I visited Jeni’s on Southport and got a Dark Chocolate Truffle on a sugar cone (I was told the sugar and cake cones were dairy-free). The Dark Chocolate Truffle is so delicous!
Temptation
Temptation brand ice cream can be found at various restaurants around Chicago featured in in milkshakes, sundaes or just a good ol bowl of ice cream. Temptation has soft serve and well as traditional ice cream.
Temptation Soft Serve is an all-natural, Non-GMO Verified, dairy-free soft serve ice cream. You can get it in Vanilla and Chocolate. Temptation Soft Serve can be found at Upton’s Breakroom 2054 W Grand Ave. As well as being Diary free it is gluten free, tree nut free, peanut free and is Soy based.
Temptation Vegan Ice Cream is an all-natural, dairy-free premium frozen dessert. As well as being Diary free it is peanut & treenut free, soy based and made in small batches. Flavors include chocolate, french vanilla, chocolate chip cookie dough, coffee, dreamsicle, green tea, mint chocolate chip, peach cobbler, pineapple, pumpkin pie, strawberry, and trippple threat. Temptation Vegan Ice Cream (in some form) can be found at – Alice & Friends, Amitabul, Atomix Cafe, El Nuevo Mexicano, Handlebar Cafe, Paulie Gee’s, Pick Me Up Cafe, Ras Dashen, The Chicago Diner, Whole Foods on Kingsbury. Some restaurants offer the ice cream on the menu others use it in sundaes, floats, milkshakes and more.
Real Good Juice Co
Real Good Juice Co offers an almond milk based soft serve – NOYO FROYO. It is vegan, diary free, gluten free, stabilizer & preservative free. Just like the juices it is raw and unpasteurized. You can find NOYO FROYO at the Old Town and Southport locations. Follow Real Good Juice Co on instagram @realgoodjuiceco to see the current flavors. You can even add toppings such as almond butter drizzle, vegan cookie crumbles, chocolate drizzle, seasonal fruit, coconut flakes, paleo granola, cacao mousse, cacao nibs, chia seeds & bee pollen.
I visited Real Good Juice Co on Southport and got the vanilla charcoal with fruit and coconut.
George’s Ice Cream & Sweets
George’s is located in Andersonville on Clark St. They get their ice cream from Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream in Madison, Wisconsin. The soy dairy-free flavors including Chocolate, Butter Pecan, Espresso, Raspberry Nebula, Ultimate Oreo and Vanilla Chocolate Chip. You can also order Italian Ice in Blue Raspberry, Lemon, Mango-Carrot, Cherry, Lemon-Raspberry and Watermelon. Not feeling a bowl of ice cream you can get The Chicago Vegan Milkshake which is your choice of Dairy free ice cream & 1 topping blended with soy or almond milk.
Kāl’ish
Kāl’ish a vegan restaurant makes small batch ice cream using coconut cream. They stock vanilla & chocolate and rotate specialty flavors. Some specialty flavors include lemon cupcake, orange creamsicle, bumpy road chocolate, joyous almond, mint choco-chunk, black cherry, Italian strawberry, cookie dough & cream, snack shop (chocolate covered potato chips, pretzels & nuts) and blueberry moon. The ice cream is served in pint containers and you can even snag sprinkles and small cones on the side. You can find Kāl’ish in Uptown on Wilson Ave.
Cookie Spin
Located in Lincoln Square, Cookie Spine uses Chocolate Shoppe ice cream and typically has a couple flavors of soy ice cream in stock at all times. They serve scoops of ice cream and vegan milkshakes, made with almond milk. You can even get a vegan friendly topping swirled in your milkshake.
Chicago Raw
Chicago Raw is a fully raw vegan food restaurant. They offer raw ice cream in single servings or pints in Madagascar Vanilla, St-raw-berry and Tripple Chocolate. You can visit Chicago Raw at the French Market in the West Loop or in the Gold Coast on Huron St.
I visited Raw at the French Market and got the Tripple Chocolate. It was different from anything I have ever had as it is made with coconut meat it had a denser texture to it almost like a thick mousse.
Sacred Serve
Sacred Serve offers handmade small batch vegan gelato. They offer 3 flavors, salted coconut caramel, dark chocolate superfood & matcha mint chip. All are gluten, dairy, soy, GMO, stabilizer and preservative free. You can get a 10 oz carton deliver via foxtrot delivery market or mercato grocery delivery. You can find it available in stores around Chicago including Foodsmart, Green Grocer Chicago, Goddess and the Baker and Go Grocer; see their website for more locations. http://sacredserve.com/locations/
Taiyaki Chicago
Taiyaki creates small batch dairy free soft serve ice cream using coconut. They offer chocolate, vanilla, matcha and a flavor of the day. You can get your ice cream in a traditional japanese taiyaki pastry, however it is unclear if these are vegan. Along with soft serve Taiyaki offers bubble tea, smoothies and milkshakes. If you are strolling around Lincoln Park give this place a try.
I tried the flavor of the day – Black Walnut, it was yummy!
Baskin Robbins
August 2019 Baskin Robbins added two non-dairy vegan ice cream flavors to its menu. The new flavors are Non-Dairy Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough and Non-Dairy Chocolate Extreme. Baskin Robbins uses coconut oil and almond butter to create its non-dairy ice creams.
Sorbet in Chicago
Frio Gelato
Frio Gelato is an Argentinian gelato shop that makes everything by hand with fresh and natural ingredients. They offer about 6 flavors of Sorbet daily. Sorbet Flavors include pineapple, chocolate, peach, mixed berry, lemon, mango, passion fruit, orange & tamarind with seasonal flavors inducing apple cider, plum and kiwi. Frio is located on Southport in Lakeview.
I visited Frio Gelato and got the Chocolate and Pineapple flavors. They had a separate cooler with all the sorbet flavors. They said the cones were not dairy free.
Black Dog Gelato
Black Dog Gelato has artisinal gelato hand crafted in small batches made fresh daily. They offer dairy-free Sorbet in Chocolate and Blood Orange; other flavors are rotated monthly for example July 2018 features cucumber rosewater, raspberry and blood orange sorbet. You can find them on Damen Ave in Ukrainian Village & in the West Loop.
I visited Black Dog Gelato at Revival Food Hall. The only sorbet flavor they had was Chocolate.
Cold Stone Creamery
Cold Stone offers Sorbet however selections vary from store to store. Flavors include Countrytime® Pink Lemonade, Lemon, Mojito, Pineapple Orange Banana, Pineapple, Raspberry, Strawberry Mango Banana, and Watermelon. You can find Cold Stone on Ohio St. in River North or on Halsted St. in Lincoln Park.
Caffe Gelato Chicago
Caffe Gelato serves gelato and sorbet made fresh daily. Their dairy-free sorbet flavors include strawberry, blood orange, raspberry, mixed berries, pineapple, peach, mango, cherry. You can find Caffe Gelato at 2034 W Diviion.
Red Mango
Red Mango is a frozen yogurt shop that offers Skinny Sorbettos that are dairy free and available in sugar free/ no sugar added flavors. Flavors include Raspberry, Dark Chocolate, Strawberry and Grapefruit. You can find Red Mango in the Loop at the Chase Tower, Millennium Station, Water Tower Place on Michigan Avenue, Wicker Park, and even at both Chicago airports.
There are many frozen yogurt shops in Chicago and most offer a dairy-free option along with toppings such as fruit, nuts, oreos and more. In the sake of not making this list 100 pages long this is the only frozen yogurt place I shall mention.

Pretty Cool is a Logan Square spot for frozen novelties. Pretty Cool uses handcrafted artisan ice cream to create their fun & colorful popsicles. Flavors for their Plant Pops include black raspberry supreme, pina colada, thai tea, dark chocolate and blue moon.
Gordo’s Ice Cream Bars
Stop by Gordo’s in Edgewater on Granville or in Printer’s Row on Dearborn. At Gordo’s you pick, dip and sprinkle. Pick a dairy free paleta (spanish popsicles) in flavors avocado banana, hibiscus tea and cinnamon horchata. Dip in dark chocolate. Sprinkle with sprinkles, toasted almonds, oreos, salted peanuts, pistachios or fruity pebbles.
